Four Ways Folding 1000 Cranes Can Help With Recovery
 Journal

Your 1000 Cranes box includes a 100-page eating disorder recovery journal, printed on origami squares. These 100 pages, and your writing on them, will then serve as a part of your full senbazuru, or 1000 cranes. The 1000 Cranes journal pages were made specifically for eating disorder recovery, using the personal experience of full recovery paired with professional expertise. You may find it easier to be honest and vulnerable on these pages, knowing that after your writing is folded, it won’t be fully legible.

PRO TIP: You can choose to fold your writing to the inside, where it will be completely hidden, or to the outside, where it is only partially legible.

In America today, folding 1000 origami cranes is maybe most often undertaken for the promise of a successful marriage. Much of the magic of folding 1000 cranes seems to come from the process—by its nature, it requires sustained focus over time. It is easy to see how folding the 1000 cranes would be helpful: the minutes spent here and there folding cranes are spent thinking about how much you love your betrothed, and what you can do to truly make them happy.

Recovery is a long process, and one that requires much reflection along the way. The folding of 1000 cranes will give you time and space to think about why it is you do (or don’t yet) want recovery, what is holding you back, what you need to start doing, or what you may need to give up. It can be a form of meditation, of reflection, or of prayer. Hopefully, it will be a place of hope, of striving, and of honesty.

PRO TIP: You might want to write something you want to let go of on some of the small origami squares, and folding the writing to the inside as you think about why you want to release it. You might even need to write the same thing on more than one crane!

To start you off on your 1000 Cranes journey, your box includes 100 small folded cranes from us. Just like recovery, most of the work is yours to do…but a little support along the way can really help make things just a little easier. Please consider these 100 cranes our personal support of you and your recovery, and our reminder that full recovery is possible.

Just like we are excited to share our 100 cranes with you, in your own recovery you may want to offer a smile or some support to someone else. We've enclosed a few extra origami squares for you to fold and give away. Sometimes, just knowing someone believes in you can make a hard day bearable. Or you are a loved one, the simple compliment of a crane can make the steps someone is taking toward recovery feel even more victorious.

PRO TIP:  Some days, the silent gift of a crane is just what is needed, but sometimes you might want to write a short message or draw a picture to brighten someone's day.

It turns out that real cranes actually have a lot to teach us about eating disorder recovery! (Did you know that cranes are one of the few large birds that search for food slowly, rather than grabbing suddenly, and who eat an astonishing variety of foods based on availability and their body’s day-to-day needs? Cranes are actually great models of mindful and intuitive eating!)  Look for more lessons from cranes on a few of your journal’s pages.

PRO TIP: Check out our videos at www.kirakiras.com/cranes to learn even more ways that they can teach us about recovery.
